Street Dance Styles.

Street dance styles are energetic, expressive, and rooted in community and culture. These include hip hop, breakin’, popping, and other freestyle-based forms that originated in city environments. Dancers build musicality, rhythm, creativity, and confidence while learning foundational moves, freestyle skills, and choreography. Training in street styles encourages individuality, self-expression, and a strong connection to the music.

Hip Hop.

Hip hop dance is part of the popular hip hop culture, which began with DJ Kool Herc in the 1970’s in New York.

Hip hop features the latest dance moves and is performed to hip hop music. It is a fusion of popping, locking, breakin’, grooving, old school, new school and any other current dance moves.

Hip hop is a freeing and spirited street dance style that involves technical precision, athleticism, creativity and self-expression. Students gain a deeper understanding of rhythm and musicality and discover their own style by freestyle dancing and learning new choreography.

Breakin’.

Boogaloo’s breakin’ program introduces students to the dynamic world of breaking, where creativity, discipline, and community come together. Dancers develop foundational skills in footwork, drops, floor work, and freezes through structured practice sets and combinations.

While learning to move confidently as individuals, students also build the ability to dance as part of a crew—exploring battle rituals, freestyle circles, and coordinated commando routines.

As their technique and confidence grow, students learn to blend personal style with group energy, developing leadership, teamwork, and mutual respect. Breakin’ at Boogaloo isn’t just about becoming a great dancer—it’s about becoming a strong, responsible, and expressive member of a larger community.

Popping.

Popping is a foundational street dance style known for its sharp, isolated movements and rhythmic precision. Dancers use quick muscle contractions—called “pops”—to create a distinct, animated effect in time with the music. Boogaloo was the very first form of popping and grooving is essential to this style.

In this class, students learn the fundamentals of popping, including techniques like hits, waves, glides, and robot movements. With a focus on control, musicality, and freestyle, popping encourages dancers to develop their own unique movement style while building coordination, timing, and confidence.

Graffiti/Street Art.

Inspired by street art legends like Banksy, this class introduces students to the bold, expressive world of graffiti. Through drawing, stenciling, and spray techniques (using safe, age-appropriate materials), students explore lettering, composition, and visual storytelling. Graffiti art encourages creativity, individuality, and a strong artistic voice—turning blank surfaces into powerful works of art.

DJ Workshop.

Boogaloo Academy has DJ workshops available for young musicians and music enthusiasts. Our instructor, Jheric Hizon, will teach the fundamentals of DJing, as well as tips and tricks for making sure the life of the party never ends.

Classes are 2 hour sessions which run for 12 weeks. These workshops require a minimum of 3 students to start and up to a maximum of 4 to ensure that each student is given individual attention.

Full-season classes.

Our full-season recreational classes run from September to June and are designed for students who want to build skills, confidence, and creativity in a fun and supportive environment. Most classes culminate in an exciting year-end performance, giving dancers the opportunity to shine on stage, celebrate their progress, and experience the joy of performing for family and friends. Participation in the show fosters teamwork, goal-setting, and a strong sense of accomplishment. A photo/video package fee applies to all full-season classes and a costume fee applies to all classes that participate in the year-end show. Technique-only classes do not perform.

Sessional classes.

Our sessional classes are short-term programs offered for 6- or 9-weeks—perfect for families looking for flexibility or wanting to try something new. These fun classes focus on building skills, confidence, and creative expression in a supportive environment. These classes are the perfect springboard to trying full-season recreational or competitive programs. Sessional programs do not participate in the year-end show, and tuition is a flat rate with no registration or costume fees required. Please visit our sessionals page here to learn more!

Competitive classes.

Our competitive programs are designed for dancers who are ready to take their training to the next level with a greater focus on technique, performance, and commitment. These classes offer more intensive instruction and additional opportunities to perform at local and regional competitions. Like our recreational full-season classes, most competitive classes also participate in our year-end show.

Competitive dancers build strong teamwork, resilience, and stage experience through regular rehearsals and performance goals. Please note that competitive programs include additional fees for competitions, costumes, and travel. A photo/video package fee applies to all full-season classes, and a costume fee applies to all classes that participate in the year-end show. Technique-only classes do not perform.
